Wisconsin Trail Pass Law

Read below for everything you need to know about the new Wisconsin Trail Pass under Wisconsin Act 142 (CAP/STEP – Club Assistance Program / Snowmobile Trail Enhancement Program)
1)

When does this new law go into effect?

A.

July 1, 2015. Act 142 requires each sled operating on public trails and corridors in Wisconsin to display a Wisconsin Trail Pass to be purchased annually. This is separate from the Wisconsin snowmobile registration.

2)

What is the cost of the Wisconsin Trail Pass?

A.

Once Act 142 is implemented, if your membership dues with North Lake Nomads is up-to-date and the club has paid your AWSC dues, the cost of the Wisconsin Trail Pass will be $10.00. If you are purchasing the new Wisconsin Trail Pass and are NOT on an Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs – AWSC member and North Lake Nomads club member the cost will be $30.00 per snowmobile.

3)

Do I have to join a club?

A.

No – It will be your choice to join either the North Lake Nomads or any one of nearly 600 AWSC snowmobile clubs statewide. Please remember that without the clubs and volunteers there would be NO TRAILS! It is the club volunteers that provide and maintain the Wisconsin Snowmobile Trail System.

4)

Where do the funds from the Wisconsin Trail Pass go?

A.

The revenue generated from the sale of snowmobile registrations and Wisconsin Trail Passes will go into the state snowmobile program’s segregated fund.

5)

Where can I purchase the Wisconsin Trail Pass?

A.

The discounted $10 resident Wisconsin Trail Pass for members will be available after (July 2015) to purchase through the AWSC office in DeForest, Wisconsin. The AWSC and the Wisconsin DNR are currently in the development stages of this procedure. Please remember that the snowmobile clubs will be responsible for purchasing their own Wisconsin Trail Pass. If you are NOT an AWSC member, then you are responsible for purchasing your Wisconsin Trail Pass through the Wisconsin DNR. Snowmobile dealers will be involved in the Wisconsin Trail Pass process.

6)

Do I still have to register my snowmobile with the State of Wisconsin?

A.

Yes, however the registration fee structure will change to a $30/3 year registration. Currently it is $30/2 years. The registration process will not change.

7)

Is the Out of State (Non-Resident) Trail Pass going to increase in cost?

A.

Yes, it will increase to $50 from $35 (current). Club membership will not result in a discount for the non-resident trail pass.

8)

My snowmobile is 30 years (or older). Do I still need a trail pass?

A.

The new law provides a free annual (yearly) Wisconsin Trail Pass for snowmobiles 30 years and older. However, snowmobiles still need to be registered. Note: Change in registration fee $30/3 year registration.

9)

If I don't live in Wisconsin? Can I still register my snowmobile(s) in Wisconsin?

A.

Yes, if you don’t reside in another state you can still register your snowmobiles in Wisconsin provided your state allows it. If you choose to belong to the North Lake Nomads or one of the nearly 600 AWSC snowmobile clubs statewide and are up-to-date with your membership dues and the club has paid your AWSC dues, the cost of the Wisconsin Trail Pass will be $10.00. If you do not belong to an AWSC club in Wisconsin your Trail Pass will cost $30.00. Otherwise you will have to purchase the out of state Trail Pass for $50.00 if your snowmobile is registered in another state.

10)

What if I own more than one snowmobile, will I be able to purchase more than one Wisconsin Trail Pass?

A.

Yes, if you own more than one snowmobile you will be able to purchase a Wisconsin Trail Pass for each one of your snowmobiles.
